Expanding FossilEra’s Legacy with a Premier Wyoming Fossil-Hunting Destination
FossilEra Adventures is excited to announce its acquisition of the renowned Fossil Safari quarry from Warfield Fossil Quarries, a move that positions the company as a leader in paleo-tourism. This acquisition marks a new chapter in the fossil-collecting world, combining FossilEra’s expertise with the iconic Fossil Safari, a celebrated destination for adventurers and paleontology enthusiasts.
The Fossil Safari quarry, located near Kemmerer, Wyoming, is famed for its rich deposits of 52-million-year-old fossils from the Green River Formation, particularly the world-class fossilized fish that have drawn thousands of visitors annually. The quarry has been operated for over 30 years by Warfield Fossil Quarries, offering a unique dig-your-own fossils experience that has delighted both amateur and experienced fossil hunters. Fossil Safari has been a staple in the fossil-collecting community, making Wyoming one of the most accessible and rewarding places for fossil hunting in the world.

Rick Hebdon the owner and operator of Warfield Fossil Quarries, has played an instrumental role in cultivating the Fossil Safari into the esteemed attraction it is today. With this acquisition, FossilEra Adventures aims to preserve the legacy of Fossil Safari while enhancing the guest experience with its modern approach to education, exploration, and customer service.
“At FossilEra, we are passionate about connecting people with the wonders of ancient life through fossils. By acquiring Fossil Safari, we are not only honoring Warfield Fossil’s long standing contribution to paleontology but also creating exciting opportunities for even more people to engage with Earth’s ancient history,” said Matt Heaton, CEO of FossilEra. “We’re thrilled to build on the experience that Rick Hebdon and his team have provided for decades.”
The quarry will operate under the name Fossil Lake Safari, allowing visitors to unearth their own fossilized treasures including dozens of species of fossil fish, plants, invertebrates, birds and reptiles. FossilEra Adventures plans to introduce enhanced services, including new educational programming, guided tours, and group experiences, further enriching visitors’ connection to paleontology. Many enhancements are planned to expand the site as well as changes to the business model allowing customers to keep nearly all of the fossils they find instead of just the common fish.
As part of the FossilEra family, Fossil Safari will benefit from FossilEra’s extensive online platform, which already serves a global community of fossil collectors. The integration of Fossil Safari into FossilEra Adventures underscores the company’s commitment to expanding access to fossil hunting while supporting the protection and education around these ancient resources.
